Court orders $507.5 million damages in Exxon Valdez spill

Article

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A federal appeals court on Monday ordered Exxon Mobil Corp to pay $507.5 million in punitive damages stemming from the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill off Alaska, plus 5.9 percent interest running from the 1996 trial judgment, the opinion said.

1989 ... 20 years ago ....

and the case didn't come to trial until 1996 which is 7 years later.

The oil spill from the Exxon Valdez supertanker in 1989 was the worst in the nation's history, blackening more than 1,200 miles of Alaska's coastline.

The clean-up alone cost around $2.5

and the fine is 20% of what it cost to clean up the mess.

Wow...if I was the guy in charge when this oil spill happened I would ... be retired by now. With a nice fat pension. And reading this in the paper and laughing and laughing and laughing ...

Justice delayed is Justice denied ? Especially 20 years later.

I vote ... no more super tankers in our waters. Not by anyone. You play stunts like this , you pay the penalty. One way or the other. Gonna stick us with the clean up tab ? We don't like that , maybe we shouldn't let you come around here anymore.
